The Ocean City Boardwalk
Boardwalk Timeline
1883Boardwalk constructed on the sand 4th Street to 7th Street
1887Boardwalk extended to 11th Street
1888Boardwalk destroyed by a typical Nor’easter
1889Boardwalk rebuilt with cement pilings 7th to 13th Streets
1898Newspaper account tells of a “new and better boardwalk.”
(It is possible that this was a rebuild in some areas)
Boardwalk completed 2nd to 13th Street
1928 to 1929Boardwalk extensively rebuilt after a serious fire in the center of the city.
1980Last Major change to Boardwalk, Park Place to 5th Street moved inland from the Ocean.
The Boardwalk today is 2.5 miles long. Areas have been rebuilt due to storm damage and normal wear. In 2000, two areas were re-decked.
