A Rough History

1883 Boardwalk constructed on the sand 4th Street to 7th Street

1888 Boardwalk destroyed by a typical Nor’easter
1889 Boardwalk rebuilt with cement pilings 7th to 13th Streets
1898 Newspaper account tells of a “new and better boardwalk.”  (It is possible that this was a rebuild in some areas)
1915 Boardwalk completed 2nd to 13th Street
1928 to  1929 Boardwalk extensively rebuilt after a serious fire in the center of the city.
1980 Last Major change to Boardwalk, Park Place to 5th Street moved inland from the Ocean.

The Boardwalk today is 2.5 miles long. Areas have been rebuilt due to storm damage and normal wear.  In 2000, two areas were re-decked.
